Candidate filing has begun in the City of Chicago, and so far there are seven who have put their hat into the race for Mayor of Chicago. The pool ranges from a native Chicagoan that understands the grassroots of the city to several major city, state, national and religious leaders. Here is a brief overview of the candidates.
- Carol Moseley Braun – First elected to public office in 1978, Moseley Braun represented Illinois and the City of Chicago in the United States Senate during the 90′s. In 2004, she was a candidate running for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. She has set many firsts during her political career and plans to do so in the City of Chicago.
- Danny K. Davis – Is a member of the United States House of Representatives for the 7th Congressional District of Illinois, a position that he has held since 1997. He began his career in public service in 1979 as member of the City Council representing the 29th Ward. He then served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners before being elected as a US Representative.
- Gery J. Chico – Has served the City of Chicago since the late eighties and early nineties. He has held a variety of roles within the city government including Chief of Staff to Mayor Daley (1992-1995) and President of the Board of Trustees of the Chicago Public Schools (1995-2003). In 2004, he focused on his senior partnership at Chico & Nunes, P.C., a law firm in the City of Chicago. In 2010, he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the City Colleges.
- M. Tricia Lee – Is a 4th generation native of the City of Chicago. Her family history can be traced back for more than a century according to her website. While she does not hold a record of service, her campaign focuses on her understanding of what it takes to grow the city because as she states, “I am Chicago.”
- Miguel del Valle – Is the current Clerk for the City of Chicago, former State Senator for the 2nd district and the first to declare his candidacy for mayor. He was appointed to the Clerk’s position in 2006 after the prior Clerk was indicted by the federal government. He was elected in 2010 to retain the position.
- Rahm Emanuel - Likely the most renowned throughout the country due to his nationally-covered resignation, he has served the City of Chicago and the United States in several capacities throughout his tenure. From 1993-98, he was the senior advisor for President Bill Clinton. From 2003-09, he served as the US Representative for the 5th congressional district of Illinois before he resigned to take the role of White House Chief of Staff for President Obama.
- Wilfredo De Jesus – Known most notably as the Reverend at the fast-growing New Life Covenant Church in the City of Chicago. The now-President Obama assigned De Jesus as an advisor to represent him around the country. He has also served as the Commissioner of the Zoning Board of Appeal. His understanding of leadership, he states, comes from growing an organization both in finances and numbers.
